What is fatty liver disease?
Fatty liver disease means fat has built up inside liver cells. The current name is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, shortened to MASLD, and the more advanced inflammatory form is MASH. It is closely tied to insulin resistance. Fat alone may cause no symptoms for years, but ongoing inflammation can lead to scarring, and enough scarring becomes cirrhosis. Because it is usually silent, it is often found on a scan or a blood test done for another reason.
How GLP-1 medications work for fatty liver disease
The effect runs through insulin sensitivity, weight, and inflammation rather than acting on the liver directly. A GLP-1 medication has been approved for MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis, and further trials are ongoing. This is a faster-moving area than the others on this page, so what is true today may be out of date within a year. Our news and law tracking follows approvals as they happen.
A tool for this is being built
We have not built an interactive tool for this one yet. When it exists it will appear on this page. In the meantime the tools we do have cover protein, hydration, fiber, side effects, and comparing the medications, and our email updates are where new ones get announced.
Other approved uses
Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity and Weight, Heart Disease, Sleep Apnea, Chronic Kidney Disease.
Approval is specific to individual products, so a use listed here does not mean every GLP-1 medication carries it. Compare the medications to see how they differ, and take the question to your prescriber.
